For a layman, there may be no actual difference. But when we talk professional, there lies a difference between these blinds that can just be demarcated by a line; or more precisely a percentage. Complete blackout is an essential factor if you are looking to achieve a peaceful unperturbed sleep routine.
What’s the difference?
Blackout blinds have a fabric that blocks almost 100% of all incoming light. Room darkening though refers to a blind which blocks almost 95% to 99% of all light entering a room through the windows. Anything that blocks less than 95% of the light is mostly called a light filtering blind.
How Does the Line Work?
To start with, a blackout blind refers to entire blackout with only a mild halo filtering out from around the blinds. The room in this case will achieve almost completely darkness. Not that we mean pitch black. But yes; there will be darkness in the room. Complete blackout can be achieved by woven wood blinds, roman blinds, solar blinds or even curtains. The room will attain a semi-darkness or partial darkness phase.
Blackout blinds work best when they adhere to two basic characteristics. First, they come with an opaque material, coupled with a tight fit window casing. Second, they cut back on light seepage or a layover in the entire window casing, with minimal distance in between the window and material.
On the other hand, if you are using a room darkening option to reduce the incoming light when the slats are closed or the vanes are lowered you could go for cellular blinds, roller blinds, sheer blinds, pleated blinds or even drapes. All of these are also available in opaque materials.
Both Options are Great for Your Bedroom
Room darkening refers to blockage of most of the sunlight. The room is blocked out or dimmed based on the fabric or material selected. Fabrics used with blackout blinds are mostly opaque.
Most people use these terms interchangeably because both are capable of enduing you with immense comfort and solitude needed for a proper sleep. The choice of the functionalities and the materials depend on the lifestyle of the home owner and the usual time when he/she is looking to wake up from his/her sleep.
