Valances are short fabric curtains used to give a decorative look to the windows. Performing their major function of concealing the drapery hardware, they also bring prominence and style. They are combined with blinds, curtains and shades to give a finished look to your window treatment.

Each type of valance gives a distinctive appearance and speaks volumes about your décor. Here are a few common types of valances that you can add to your window coverings.

Scarf Valances

Scarf or swag valances, as the name suggests, are a drapery fabric simply swagged across the top of the window. In short, the fabric is draped from one of the end of the valance rod to the other while the middle part of the fabric drapes down with a swag in a semicircular shape. This type of valance gives a soft and decorative touch to the windows. It is perfect for smaller windows and works best with sheer drapery panel or simple blinds and shades.

Tailored Valances

Ideal for rooms with a formal decor, tailored valances are the perfect choice for giving a crisp and sleek look to your windows. It is made by covering a box (matching the width of your windows) with a complementing fabric by adding a centre pleat into the design. This type of valances looks best with matching pleated drapes.

Cornice Valances

Cornice valances are similar to tailored valances in appearance. They are made of a lightweight material such as plastic or fibreboard and can be installed by using brackets and braces. They are perfect for hiding curtain rods and can be used for storage purposes. You can add this type of valances to all window types as they create a versatile look and enhances the overall appearance.

Jabot Valances

Jabot valances consist of three pieces of fabric, draped and tapered together to create a beautiful, decorative valance. One piece of the valance adjusts in the centre to cover the width of the window while the other two hang on each side of the window to create a voluminous look. This type of valance perfectly complements the Victorian style of décor and adds depth to the window treatment making it a treat to see.

Valances are more than a drapery fabric hanging on the top of your window treatment. These ornamental pieces not only cover the drapery rods and functional headrails on blinds but also add a personality to your windows. There are a wide variety of valances that complement different décors and create different looks. Select the one that looks best with your windows to give an attractive appearance to your home’s interiors.
