Bedspread or Duvet

The outermost layer of a bed commands a lot of attention due to its sheer size and dominance in a bedroom. Hence, it’s important for you to pick out a style and material which suits the rest of your home and also matches your taste. Your choice will also depend on how your bedding will interact with the other design elements in your room and how you’ll be using your bed.

In this post, we’ll explore some common base layers to help you understand their functions.

Quilts

Quilts have perhaps one of the richest histories among all bed coverings. Frugal home sewers used to place scraps of kitchen textiles and worn clothing together onto two sides of a blanket, sandwiching a layer that provided warmth to its owners. Quilting is also a term used for different designs created using threads as they bind two separate layers of fabric together. This means that quilting isn’t only limited to quilts. Comforters and duvets can also be quilted.

Coverlets

Coverlets are known to slightly differ from quilts. Where quilts may contain a middle layer providing warmth, coverlets have no such thing within them. Hence, they are considered to be un-quilted because they lack the lines which occur when the separate layers of textiles are sewn with each other. An ornamental choice can be two sheets stitched to each other consisting of one decorative fabric and a plain one on the reverse side. Coverlets can be made fitted, semi-fitted, throw-style or even loose.

As is evident from the name, fitted coverlets are the most tailored and the tightly fitted kind is mainly just for decorative purposes. The coverlet is made to fit the mattress like a cap by the side flaps being sewn together. It isn’t designed in a way which will make bed making an easy task for you or so that you can toss and turn underneath it. Just make sure you stock your quilts and comforters with varying levels of warmth so your family and guests who use them are comfortable.

Bedspreads

Bedspreads are constructed similarly to coverlets, but they’re designed specifically to meet the floor. Coverlets, however, are designed so that they fall a few inches below the mattress. The style of bedspreads adds an ethereal and soft look to your bedroom and works really well in period homes. Box pleats or gathers can be incorporated to characterize these bedspreads too.

Duvets

Duvets are polyester, cotton, or even blended blankets which can be used by themselves but must really be protected by what are called duvet covers. The cover is much more than a washable bag for the insert. It’s generally composed of a couple of fabric sides which are joined together with buttons, ties or hidden zippers.

Quality and proper bedding could mean the difference between a night spent tossing and turning in bed or getting proper sleep. Now that you know everything about finding the best option for you, you can make an informed decision about bedding items which will suit your family’s needs.
