Windows form the primary link between your home and the natural world outside. While they lend architectural beauty to your room with their structure, there are several ways to spruce up their appearance further. You can shop for ready-made curtains and draperies, shades, shutters and blinds, but you can give them a personal touch through customization.
In this blog post, we’ve put together some simple ideas to help you personalize your window treatments and lend a distinct personality to your room.
If you have ready-made shades, you can easily add a customized look to them. Here are two ways to do it –
Roman Shades: Add colourful cut outs of bold designs or patterns from another fabric and stitch/attach them on your roman shade. It will work well only if your roman shade has a solid colour, preferably a lighter hue like cream, off-white, powder blue, light pink, pistachio green, muted yellow, and lighter shades of brown and grey.
Roller Shades: Put your painting skills to use! Take scrap paper and lay the shade flat on top of it. Choose a latex paint that complements both the shade and the room. Tape off the edges of the shade and apply the paint with a roller brush. Remove the tape immediately and let the paint dry. Next, take a stencil and spray its back with a spray adhesive and press it on the shade. Then take fabric paint and apply it directly on to the shade with a brush. Remove the stencil when you’re done and allow the paint to dry. Your personalized roller shade is ready!
You can easily transform your simple monotone pleated curtains or draperies into interesting window coverings. Complementing the colour of your curtains, take a two-toned ribbon and create bows. Now attach these beautiful hand-crafted bows to the top of each pleat of the curtain. To add more zing to your curtains, you can add the ribbons at the bottom of the curtains to create stripes. You’ll just need fabric glue or a fusible web to attach the ribbons.
Burlap used in furnishing is a lighter material than the coarse burlap used for sacks. If you have a bold patterned curtain or drapery, a burlap valance can add a beautiful texture to your curtains. Jazz up the raw edges of the burlap by stitching or attaching decorative trims. Hang the curtains and the valances with the help of curtain clips to complete the look.
This is one interesting idea to make the layered look of your window treatments appear as a set. Stitch or attach dark or light coloured velvet trims to the sides of the floor-length curtains throughout its length and bottom. Also add trims on the bottom of the shade. When you finally hang your curtains and shade on the window, the trims will form an “H” along the length of the window, providing a very stylish, personalized appearance.
